Exchanges like the above can be a pain if you don’t have a trusty SCRABBLE dictionary handy to give the final word on whether a skeptical Scrabbler can swindle your points away from you or surrender their own turn. Fortunately, international verbiage magnate Merriam-Webster Inc. has launched a new iPhone/iPad app containing the Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary.
The app, available in the iTunes store for $4.99, contains more than 100,000 valid two- to eight-letter words for SCRABBLE play, including alternative spellings depending on geography (so you Canadians can play your doughnuts, colours and centres.) It also features a Word Finder to see what words are available to you with your tiles (although the rulebook might have an issue with that practice in the middle of a game!).
Merriam-Webster president John M. Morse said, “SCRABBLE is one of America’s favorite word games, enjoyed by adults and children alike,” adding, “we are pleased to aid in this play by bringing one of our most popular dictionaries to the mobile space.”
