If, by “bar,” you mean, “hate rally.”
On Monday, anti-Zionist activists gathered outside Toronto’s Queen’s Park to rally for what they see as being the necessary liberation of Palestine. The al Quds rally, ‘Quds’ being the Arabic word for ‘Jerusalem,’ was sponsored by The Canadian Shia Muslims Organization (or CASMO.) Interestingly, CASMO boasts standing against anti-Semitism (as well as Islamophobia and Racism) on its website.
Among the rally’s more memorable speakers were York Region Imam Zafer Bangash, an Iranian student of Khomeinism — yes, the same Khomeini who says a man should never eat the meat of an animal he’s had sex with — and, for some reason, a woman by the name of Karin Brothers, introduced as a representative of the United Church of Canada.
The United Church — particularly Canada’s chapter — has always been rather progressive, so its support of Palestine is unsurprising. That being said, when pro-Palestinianism turns into anti-Zionism and then to blatant anti-Semitism, it begs the question of how anyone can, in good conscience, support such a cause. Imam Bangash’s charismatic speech to the thousands of attendees lambasted “the black man in the White House” and referred to Israel as a “Zionist parasitic state.”
He even called for Sharia Law governance over the State of Israel, or rather the land filled with what the good Imam classifies as “inhuman” and “barbaric.” The response to these radical claims from the Hezbollah flag-waving crowd were not jeers of condemnation, but shouts of “Allahu Akbar.” (Security at the event were asking media to observe Sharia Law as well.)
One speaker at the rally referred to Israel as the blood-sucking Zionist regime. Another gave a poetic comparison of Zionism to a “cancer” that spreads and colonizes.
In spite of the rather vitriolic speeches given at what amounted to somewhat of a hate-fest, the soft spoken Karin Brothers took to the stage with her message of praise for the “peace activists” she was sharing the stage with and to say to her Islamic comrades, “We need you.”
If CASMO invited Ms. Brothers under the pretense of inclusivity, why didn’t Karin Brothers stand out when Jews were referred to as parasites? Why didn’t she speak up when Zionists were referred to as being cancerous? More importantly, was she there as a representative of the United Church of Canada as the event organizers seemed to think?
These are the questions that no one has answered.
A spokeswoman for the United Church of Canada stated that, “Karin Brothers is a member of the United Church of Canada. She’s welcome to share her opinion as a member but does not speak on the policies of the United Church of Canada.” The spokeswoman added that the United Church of Canada’s policy on Israel is clear, noting that the organization supports a two-state solution in the region.
A representative from CASMO did not respond to a request for comment on whether or not they do, in fact, see Israel as a “Zionist, parasitic state.”
